Gain in-depth theoretical and practical skills in the field of endodontics by attending this diploma course in endodontics. It is designed for dentists, dental clinicians and dental students with a degree in dentistry. Attendees will acquire a deeper understanding of the development, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of pulpal and periapical disease, methods for diagnosis and treatment as well as a cost-benefit perspective on assessment of disease and treatment decisions.

This intensive, four-day classroom training course includes is held at Malmö University in Malmö. Upon successful completion of the course, you will receive two university credits from the Faculty of Odontology at Malmö University.

Learning outcomes

The objective of the course is to provide participants with a deeper understanding of the development, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of pulpal and periapical disease. Methods for diagnosis and treatment are discussed in relation to scientific evidence. The starting point for discussions is a cost-benefit perspective on assessment of disease and treatment decisions.

Upon successful completion of the course, the course participant shall be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

  • Describe basic theoretical principles regarding endodontic disease in relation to epidemiology, etiology, assessment, diagnosis, management and prognosis
  • Give an account of current methods for diagnostics and management in endodontics

Skills and abilities

  • Present and discuss clinical cases regarding epidemiology, etiology, diagnosis, management and prognosis

Judgement and approach

  • Adopt a position on ethical issues when discussing clinical cases

Course content

The course comprises theoretical and practical education in endodontics. This will encompass:

  • Epidemiology, etiology and progression of pulpal and periapical disease
  • Microbial biofilm in the oral environment and in the root canal
  • Diagnostic methods including imaging
  • Guidelines and principles for non-surgical/surgical disease management, including: deep caries, tooth cracks and resorptions
  • Diagnosis and management of acute and chronic tooth pain
  • Assessment of non-root filled and root filled teeth before prosthodontic treatment

Course plan

  • Deep caries – defense reactions and treatment options
  • Pulpal and periapical disease – etiology and disease progression
  • Pulpal and periapical diagnostics
  • Imaging techniques as diagnostic tools in pulpal and periapical conditions
  • Microbial biofilm in the oral environment and in the root canal
  • Surgical and non-surgical treatment of pulpal and periapical disease. Principles, techniques and treatment options
  • Assessment of root filled and non-root filled teeth before prosthodontic treatment
  • Diagnosis and management of tooth cracks and tooth resorptions
  • Acute and chronic tooth pain. Possibilities and difficulties in diagnosis and management
  • Written exam

Course method, literature and language

Method: Interactive lectures, practical workshops and case discussions where course participants present and discuss their cases.

Literature: Recommended literature will be presented during the course. In addition, participants will be expected to independently search for, gather and assess relevant literature.

Language: English.

Assessment of student

The participants’ knowledge, understanding, skills, abilities, judgement and approach are evaluated in a written examination at the end of the course.

Credits, fee and other information

Credits: 2

Fee: 27 000 SEK per participant (excluding VAT). The course fee covers course participation, study materials (electronic handouts), lunch for four days and a joint course dinner one evening.

Other information: The participant is responsible for obtaining all necessary permits and visas for visiting Sweden. The participant is responsible for all arrangements for travel and accommodation. These are not included in the course fee and must be paid for by the participant. A list of recommended hotels can be provided upon request.
